Exercise helps senior doldrums

Depression can be a major issue for seniors who have retired, experienced a physical set back or who have moved to a new locale. They separated from their family, coworkers and work routine, left with a lot of time to fill.  Often their thoughts turn toward all they have lost, not only the foregoing, but also their physical abilities.

Whatever the level of function, most seniors can benefit from some sort of exercise. Doing so will not only give them something to do and, eventually, look forward to, but may also make them actually FEEL better.

Here is a good, short video that explains the benefit of exercise on depression.

Medical Management at the Beach

So, your mom, dad, or beloved aunt moved to the shore or beach to enjoy the quality of life they deserve after decades of hard work - Great! Right?  Not if you are hard at work in the city.  You may like to be able to attend doctor's visits with them and make sure everything is going along as well as they tell you.

You are not alone.  Many of us working Joes and Joannes are struggling to balance kids in college (or with small children!) and our older loved ones.  Often in diverse geographic areas.  There you are stuck in the middle.  Literally!

Why not let me help?  I am a Certified Disability Management Specialist - Masters Prepared and experienced in providing medical management and monitoring.  I would be happy to help you ensure your loved one is faring as well as you hope.

Or perhaps you are the patient and would like some additional, knowledgeable support to ensure you are getting the best possible care.  I work with Nurse Case Managers as well, in the event that your concerns are more complex.

Here is a short list of things I can do for you or your loved one on the DelMarVa:

Attend doctor's visits

Follow up on doctor's visits for medical records or prescriptions
Arrange an monitor additional services
Serve as a local connection and resource
Home visits and check-ins
Deliver last minute gifts or goodies

Have something else in mind?  Let me know; I am happy to help!

Many 55 Plussers are looking for new opportunities post "retirement"

Many of our DelMarVa neighbors come here as a part of a retirement plan, but may not have much of a plan at all.  Dreams of enjoying life near the beach or in more rural areas may have been dampened by the unexpected expense of actually living here full time.  Or, worse, by boredom!

Many of my 55+ clients are bored and miss the social aspects of working. However, there are not a lot of jobs out there and the ones that are available are quickly snapped up.  Often we talk about updating computer skills, many of which are free online, like www.gcflearnfree.org.

Sometimes self-employment makes sense.  If you have already had a full career you most likely have knowledge or skill you may be able to turn into profit by starting a local or internet business.  Or, you
may have a hobby that could be transformed into a second career.

One of my clients, 80+ took so many pottery classes that she became a teacher at a local college of life long learning - she was previously a real estate agent, if memory serves!  She tells me she took one class and was hooked!

Keeping the mind sharp is always a recommendation, no matter your age.  For this, I often recommend http://www.lumosity.com or learning a foreign language at a local library or community college.

Your local library can be a great place to be social and feed your brain.  Often they have people available to teach basic computer skills or even offer more advanced classes. If you don't have a library card, I strongly urge to to visit your nearest library and get one.

Most people are here because they want to be - I know I am.  I think it is a great place to be if your are retiring, starting a second career or going into business.  I came across this article not long ago that may be of interest to you: http://longtermcare.gov/where-you-live-matters/staying-in-your-home/ .

What do you think?  I would love to know!
