TRAVEL-COOK, both foodies, Disability Management Specialist Mary Sherwood Sevinsky and Husband, Jim Shiber, an orientation and mobility instructor, love to travel, cook, and eat! Most often, the food we make is much better than that we get in restaurants, so we often have to get creative when traveling, especially in rural areas!

Click on the following link to open articles of interest for this week! I am experimenting with an online newspaper format that should make reading the articles a little more interesting. Other topics are included, but of course, I am primarily "Working to get people working...."

Slower Lower....
November, 2011
Well it certainly does feel like Slower Lower Delaware now that the cold weather and short days have set in! Can't say we miss the lack of traffic, although it was VERY BUSY around town this weekend - a lot of folks in for the Holidays, I guess!
A new local effort caught my eye this week - not too sure what to make of it, but will try to like it!
A new Delaware Business geared toward Tourism and Marketing (two of my favorite things!).

Workday Fun!
September, 2011
We took Friday off to go to a Show in Baltimore - Tab Benoit w/ Jamie McLean Band at the Rams Head
Live! We stayed at the Sheraton downtown, so we could walk everywhere. What a great show. For
coffee, we went to Caribou Coffee just down the block then off to the Lexington Market, where we had
huge crabcakes from Faidley's. I bought an unbelievable amount of fried chicken livers for $5 - who knew they would give me so much!?
There was a poor old lady in a wheel chair hoping for a slice of white bread that the vendor had security haul
her away - if we had known we would have taken the white bread they offered with the chicken livers to give
to her!
Apparently some of the businesses have some issues with public urination:
The owner painted on the wall "Don't urinate here (arrow) $500 fine. You will be arrested."
Stopped in to see Jim's mom and she seems to be doing well, but threw her back out the day before (on her birthday!) cleaning up after the plumber....
Back home in time to go to the Dogfish and relaxed by the fire until Hope and Tom arrived.

Blues at the Beach
October, 2011
I can't believe I am just getting around to posting a note about our trip to Arkansas! We had a great time, of course and wonderful weather.
The lineup included Buddy Guy, Blind Mississippi Morris, T Model Ford, Lonnie Shields, Michael Burks, Big Bill Morganfield and many others! I will have to upload my camera and post some pictures...
September, 2011
We had a great time in Virginia Beach! We had a nice water front room at the Sheraton.
We brought our bikes and road all over - down to Rudee Inlet and back.
Unfortunately I got VERY burnt, despite the late in the season sun... Blues at the Beach had some great performers, including one of my new favorites Grady Champion.
Can't wait until next year!

Hurricane Irene Cleanup!
We were very lucky to have so little damage, really. Lost a couple of big limbs from a tree out back that we will likely need to cut down now. I had to pick up all the wayward sticks while Jim applied the chain saw.... Hard work for a Labor Day Weekend! Hope to get in some fishing before the rain, at least.
I got a picture of the culprits who have been devastating our garden:
This Golden Orb was temporarily relocated to our deck door (from the back porch/holly tree where he typically resides):
And I keep trying to get the hummingbirds, but they are FAST!
We put our time locked up inside and our harbaneros from the garden to good use making a huge batch of hotsauce!
Before and after shots of the damage:

AFTER:
Random Shots from Hurricane Ida in our illicit drive around Lewes and Rehoboth:

Google Part II
Ok - apparently couples, a family or a business (oh almost forgot, a pet either!) can't have a presence in google plus. So, I have it set so my name appears and Jim is a nickname. Hopefully that will work - want his family and friends to find him without having to maintain separate pages!
I did hear from an actual person (via email), which was surprising! I emailed a question and didn't hear back. Not sure when this will be lifted or when it started really. So I will probably resend photo's from our recent trip just in case!

Grrrr... Google!
I love google, don't get me wrong! BUT, this Names Policy is just stupid. Jim and I have a shared account and have a very logical email address for that purpose: jimshiber.marysherwood@gmail.com.
At some point after I started my blog on blogspot, I needed to indicate how I wanted posts to appear. Naively, I decided Jim and Mary at the Beach would be a logical way for any posts or communiques to appear. His name is Jim, my name is Mary, we live at the beach.....
Google does not agree this is logical and, in fact, feels that this name might be nefarious and has suspended my privileges. I am not entirely sure this post will "post!"
This is very aggravating, to say the least. As a long time google user, I know that this violation has been detected and is being reviewed by a computer. I have filed an appeal and also have changed my name in the meantime (although I can't change it back for 30 days). I am not entirely convinced the appeal will be reviewed by a person.
It will be interesting to see how long this takes to resolve - hope not too long.

Assess yourself before job searching
There are several different kinds of résumé s and you may have several versions, depending on where you are in the hiring process and/or what types of jobs you will be seeking. Before starting your résumé , though, you will want to identify your strengths, skills, and abilities.
Take the time to complete a SKILLS AND INTEREST ASSESSMENT like the one from Alpinelink or Rileyguide or Quintcareers which are helpful. Look up typical skills and abilities in ACINET.org In short, think about the following:
In terms of employment, what are you able to
Do?
Teach?
Use (software/tools/equipment)?
In terms of your personal/community life, what are you able to
Do?
Teach?
Use (software/tools/equipment)?
What do you really enjoy doing?
Where do you really enjoy being?
How do you like to communicate?
What do you feel strongly about?
What do you think about?
How would your closest friends/family describe you (then ask them and add to the list)?
How would your current or most recent coworkers/fellow students describe you (then ask them and add to the list)?
What job would you most like to have?
Where would you most like to work?
What are some of your weaknesses or something you have to work on to be your best?

Another Hot Day on Delmarva!
Not sure if it will be 94, 97, or over 100 degrees (again!) today... One thing is for sure - it is going to be HOT. AND, it might thunderstorm.
We are currently paralyzed and have no idea if we should bike to the beach for a swim, go to the State Fair, or visit a fine local establishment for a refreshing cocktail in cooling air conditioning.
Thrown into the mix is the fact that we visited the new Touch of Italy on Second Street in Lewes, Delaware. Finally! We have stopped by several times, but it is always so packed we have given up. Too quickly it seems.
The prosciutto(s),I didn't know there was more than one kind, are out of this world delicious. So, we will have some wrapped around melon and fig purchased at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market and some cucumber and tomato (from our garden) sandwiches on Kogler Old World whole wheat bread.
For dinner? Smoked pork tenderloin. We are currently considering a garlic brown sugar marinade that includes a touch of tobasco. I bought carrots and turnips last week at the market and was able to find a recipe for a combination mash - I plan to add a granny smith to the recipe!
Jim just made us some fresh squeezed lemonade - yum.... We may not leave the house!
